Easy Instant Vegetable Garden
Here's a great weekend garden project - actually it will only take an hour - that's easy to do, low cost, and will provide you joy and good organic treats all summer long. It's also a great project to do with your kids.
Project Rating (1 = low, 5 = high)Time: 1 Cost: 1 Effort: 2 Fun: 4
Tools needed:
- ShovelMaterials Needed:
- 2 bags of soil (topsoil or triple mix is best)
- vegetable plants (get small to medium size plants at your local garden store or Home Depot)
- Vegetable fertilizer (Miracle Grow for vegetables is good)
Cost:
- $10 for soil
- $40 for plants (cost for 5 plants)
- $15 for 2 tomato cages or a wide lattice
- total $65
Steps
- Pick an area in your yard that gets lots of sun. Somewhere along a fence is preferred is you will be growing any vine type veggies (like tomatoes) as it makes it easier to support them as the plants grow taller.
- Dig out the grass with a regular shovel or edger. You only need to go a few inches deep just to the grass roots and literally shave off the top layer of grass sod exposing the soil underneath. Discard the grass sod.
- Rake the soil to break it up. Add 2 bags of new topsoil or triple mix
- Dig holes for each vegetable plant with a hand shovel (you should only need small holes). Make sure to space each vegetable far enough apart to give it some room when it grows bigger.
- Fertilize after a 10 days or so
- That's it. Your Done !
